Brahmas Welcome the Spartans for the Home Opener


The Bellville Brahmas are off to a 2 - 0 start for the first time since 2011. After their opening win against Madisonville, the Bulls traveled to Bay City and ground out a 24 - 15 win.

The 1 - 1 Stafford Spartans are headed to season home opener in the Pasture of Pain after a 41 - 14 opening win over Paetow and a loss to Calhoun by the score of 28 - 7.

The Spartans are led this season by #6 J. Pamugo who has rushed for 143 yards on 20 carries this year. Quarterback #2 J. Scott has rushed for 94 yards on 17 carries, and passed for 97 yards on 9 of 20 attempts. Two of the passes were for touchdowns. The leading receiver is #10 K. Jordan with 4 receptions for 43 yards. Jordan also had 78 yards in kickoff returns, and 43 yards in punt returns.

Leading tacklers for the Spartans are #48 K. Savanah with 18, followed by #12 S. Riles with 13. Sophomore #5 C. Williams leads the team with 3 tackles for a loss.

Junior #19 P. Trevino has kicked off 9 times with a 29 yard average, while #10 K. Jordan has punted 8 times for a 37 yard average.

This the 11th meeting between Bellville and Stafford. The Brahmas hold a 6-3-1 series lead. The two teams battle to a 7 - 7 ties in the 1990 series opener. Bellville won the 1991 game 19 - 9. The teams did not play again until 2002, and Bellville won five straight before Stafford won 14 - 9 in 2014. The teams have played every year since 2014, and Stafford has won three of four, including last year 7 - 5.
